Product Description

In EDI high purity water is produced by combining ion exchange resin with ion exchange membranes inside a stack. Ions are removed from the water using a DC CURRENT. This DC CURRENT also continuously regenerates the ion exchange resin without using regeneration chemicals.

 

Reverse osmosis (RO) permeate enters the EDI stack in the figure below. Initially ion exchange occurs with the ion exchange media in the dilute compartments. Under the influence of an applied electrical potential, ions move towards their respective electrode. Cations in the diluting compartment move towards the cathode and pass through the cation membrane into a concentrate compartment. These cations are trapped in the concentrate compartment as they cannot pass the anion membrane. Anions move in the reverse direction towards the anode and are similarly trapped in the concentrate compartment. A small fraction of the RO permeate flushes the ions out of the concentrate compartments, producing the concentrate stream. Water splitting produces H+ and OH− ions providing continuous regeneration of the resin in the dilute compartments. On the concentrate side H+ and OH− recombine to produce H2O.

1. Raw water booster pump-- provide the pressure to quartz sand filter/active carbon filter.

Applications

 

When fed with low TDS feed (e.g., feed purified by RO), the product can reach very high purity levels (e.g. 18megohms/cm). The ion exchange resins act to retain the ions, allowing these to be transported across the ion exchange membranes. The main applications of EDI technology, such as that supplied by Ionpure, E-cell and SnowPure, are in electronics, pharmaceuticals and power generation.

One important aspect in the water treatment application is that some types of EDI needs to have feed water that is free from CO
2, as well as other dissolved gasses, since these put unnecessary strain on the EDI unit and will reduce performance.
